Get back on the buses!

23 June 2009

Greater Manchester’s Museum of Transport is organising a reunion for anyone who used to work for the bus companies of Greater Manchester. This special event will see the Museum open its doors free to everyone for one day only this Saturday.

In particular, we are looking for anyone who worked on the latest addition to our collection - a 1936 Crossley double decker - which operated from Princess Road and Queens Road depots until it was withdrawn in 1951, so if you worked at one of these two depots before this time, you’ll probably have worked on this bus.

A number of heritage buses will operate a free bus service to and from Victoria Station to give people the chance of a nostalgic ride from the past. In comparison we will have a pair of new buses from First and Stagecoach to show how things have changed.

There will also be displays of old and new items such as uniforms, ticket machines and timetables. From our extensive collection of photographs we’ve printed out pictures of the staff who used to operate our buses - and we’ll be asking visitors to identify anyone they recognise!

The event, which takes place on 27th June 2009, will be free to all from 1000 to 1700.
