Dads and grandads (and mums and grandmas, too) enjoy telling their offspring how they used to get around Manchester (or anywhere else for that matter) when they were young. A perfect opportunity to indulge in this pastime presents itself at the Museum of Transport in Boyle Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester M8 8UW on Saturday and Sunday, July 19th and 20th 2008. It’s the Festival of Model Tramways, the national show of tramway models that’s rapidly becoming international.

Lots of model trams, in all shapes and sizes, will be running through delightful miniature townscapes. There will be static displays, too and those who fancy trying their hands at the hobby will find expert advice available together with trade stands selling everything they need. Those who have made model trams can bring them along to enter, free, on the day, the Models Competition. Best-in-show takes the cup home at the end of the show.

The Museum’s full-sized trams and buses will be on show, too and some of the buses will be giving free rides to and from Victoria Station, the Museum and the heritage tramway in Heaton Park where it is hoped that the tramway’s newly-restored horse tram will be operating on the afternoon of Saturday 19th July.

The fun starts at Boyle Street at 10am, until 5pm each day. Admission for an adult will cost £6.50, over 65s £5.50, under 16s free (must be accompanied by a paying adult).

You can find more information on the Show’s website at www.tramways.freeserve.co.uk

The Museum of Transport is easy to get to. Car parking is limited but local buses pass close by. Alternatively, enjoy a ride on a modern tram by taking Metrolink to Victoria Station and the free heritage bus service to the Museum. And they’ll take you back again, of course.
