Greater Manchester's Museum of Transport

Visit Manchester

Greater Manchester Transport Society

The Society was established in 1971 as the SELNEC Transport Society. In 1974 its name changed to Greater Manchester Transport Society in line with the change of SELNEC to Greater Manchester Transport.

In 1979, the Society, in partnership with GMPTE, opened the Museum of Transport to the public and it has been open every year since then!

The Museum of Transport was originally open on Sundays only, between April and October. To allow more opportunities for people to visit the Museum, the opening days were extended many years ago, and we are now open every Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays (except at Christmas and New Year).

The Society became a Registered Charity in 1980 and a company limited by guarantee in 1996.

After much hard work, the Museum of Transport achieved Registered Museum status in May 2003, demonstrating that the Society, through the Museum:

has achieved approved standards in museum management, collection care and public services is a suitable home for collections which are part of common heritage is worthy to receive support from public sources
